Madonna and Child

“Madonna and Child”

Based on an Icon, Based on an Icon, Based on an Icon...

Refered to as " The Madonna Scroll" the painting on silk is thought to be painted in China during the 16 or 17th Century. It is kept at the Feild Museum in Chicago, IL. and has only been unrolled twice in the last 20 years. The artist of the scoll is debated but most scholars believe the artist based the silk painting on the icon "Salus Populi Romani" which has been housed in Rome since the 5th Century.

The image immediately struck me. I tried to make the icon appear to be painted on silk, like the original, even though it is painted on wood. The child now holding the mothers hand.
