“I see the Mandylion as a painting or writing of a writing, a imaging of an image. It is called the “first Icon”, According to the legend, King Abgar of Edessa wrote to Jesus, asking him to come cure him of an illness. Abgar received a reply letter from Jesus, declining the invitation, but promising a future visit by one of his disciples. The Disciple Thaddeus came instead and the King was soon healed. However, after the miracle the kings messenger, who was also a painter, painted a portrait of Jesus on a cloth for the king to remember the healing he had received in the name of Jesus.”
